After a 3 year absence, Colt Cabana made his return to the IWC (International Wrestling Cartel) at their 8th annual Super Indy Tournament this past May. This was the first time I had seen him since his WWE release, and I was reminded of just how AWESOME he really is. Based on his performance at the two-day Super Indy event, as well as his past adventures in both WWE and ROH, I have compiled a dozen of the many reasons why Colt Cabana is one of my favorite wrestlers in the business today.
Those reasons are (in no particular order):
1. He has a very entertaining character and a ton of charisma.
Most professional wrestling fans will admit that a very large portion of the sport is the entertainment aspect. Some may evens say it’s more important than the athletic talent (see John Cena and Hulk Hogan). “Classic” Colt Cabana / Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana, the nickname change doesn’t matter – he has that loveable personality that you need to get a crowd to care about who you are.
2. He is very athletic and talented in the ring.
Yes, he has the charisma, the hilarious character, AND he is awesome when he’s in the ring doing business. He has impressive speed and agility for a guy his size. He’s a very talented athlete who’s matches I have always enjoyed watching.
3. His blogs.
Here, I am largely referring to the creative and hilariously entertaining blogs he would post on his WWE Universe page while he was with the company. The subject matter combined with the completely real and un-edited pictures made them must-reads.
4. The Second City Saints.
If this stable name doesn’t mean anything to you, then do yourself a favor and peek into the ROH history to find out what you missed. Colt Cabana + CM Punk + Ace Steel = AWESOME. The tag-team of Cabana and Punk always guaranteed you a good match and the out-of-ring antics of all three of them were just as good. The chemistry between these guys was just perfect.
5. His multiple personalities.
Colt Cabana and Matt Classic (of WSX fame) are NOT the same person, so please quit accusing him of that! (Catch my drift?)
6. His wardrobe.
Polka dots, Kamala t-shirts, and most recently new to me his ‘pro wrestling’ tights complete with wrestling moves written all over make Cabana one of the best dressed wrestlers out there. Don’t forget the headbands! Cabanarama forever!
7. The way he treats his fans.
Have you ever met the guy? The humor and charming personality you see in the ring is exactly how I’ve experienced he interacts with his fans. Personally, I haven’t encountered too many professional wrestlers who aren’t cordial to the fans, but Cabana goes above and beyond just smiling and saying thank you. I’m fairly certain I recall seeing video footage of him helping an elderly woman cross the street – it doesn’t get much nicer than that!
8. The ROH feud with Homicide.
This rivalry was intense and led to some crazy hardcore matches between the two. There was gasoline, ladders, tables, and even a ring full of chairs hand-thrown there from the ROH fans. This is a prime example of the type of competitor Cabana can be. It shows off a side of him I hadn’t seen before. Don’t let the polka dots fool you, this guy is tough!
9. “Good Times, Great Memories”
Many shenanigans were had on Cabana’s very own ROH talk show. I highly recommend the one with Bobby Heenan or the one with “Dusty Rhodes.” That is also the name of his ROH Best Of… dvd, which is well worth the money and includes those two shows I just mentioned. Good stuff!
10. “What’s Crackin’?”
Although short lived, “What’s Crackin’?” was one of the ways Colt Cabana was able to shine during his time in the WWE. It was an online show so I can’t really comment on whether it was popular or not, but it was good! Cabana took the opportunity he was given and made it an entertaining segment. Too bad it couldn’t have lasted longer.
11. His dance moves.
Whether it is a dance off with Too Cold Scorpio or a strut off with Larry Sweeney, Colt Cabana never fails to bust out a good dance move. Yet another reason that he is an AWESOME entertainer!
12. He brings his comedy into the ring.
Last but certainly not least, I wanted to mention how well Cabana is able to carry his personality with him even after the bell sounds. I think this is something that is rarely found in WWE matches. There’s no reason you can’t squeeze in some extra laughs at the beginning of a match. The Rock was funny, yes, but do you remember laughing during any of his matches? Okay okay, I know what you’re saying, “But Missy, that’s not what’s important in the world of WRESTLING.” Yes, that is a valid point. But it sure doesn’t hurt every now and then either! More people should trick their opponents into looking up to the rafters so they can step on their toes. It’s a good technical move!
Well there you have it. There are other reasons, don’t get me wrong, but as you have noticed I think I have gone on long enough. So whether it’s in the ring, out of the ring, in ROH, IWC, WWE, or WXS, and whether he’s in America, Canada, Mexico, or over in Jolly Old England, just remember one thing – COLT CABANA IS AWESOME!!!
