Our Favorite Matches Of The Pandemic Era

July 2021 is a big month for professional wrestling. WWE and AEW are returning to live touring. Impact Wrestling and Ring Of Honor are welcoming back live fans for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Somehow, professional wrestling survived more than a year of uncertainty, lockdowns and empty arenas.

The Wrestling Mayhem Show wanted to celebrate the wrestlers and the other creative minds who helped us get through the past year and a half. Here are some favorite matches of our hosts, guests and listeners from the “Pandemic Era” – the period of time that began in the middle of March 2020 and stretched into July 2021.

Mayhem Mania 2021: Round 5

It must be Mayhem Mania season!

Every year, we bring together fans, wrestlers and other folks. Our goal is to construct the BEST WrestleMania card that’s currently possible. Everyone under a WWE contract is eligible to use, as are those who are within the orbit of WWE’s influence. If Vince McMahon can do it, we can do it!

If you’re just tuning in, here’s how we got to this point.
Mayhem Mania 2021 – Opening Round
Mayhem Mania 2021 – Round 1
Mayhem Mania 2021 – Round 2
Mayhem Mania 2021 – Round 3
Mayhem Mania 2021 – Round 4

Not every WWE wrestler is eligible to use. Under the rules of Mayhem Mania, everyone comes in their current physical, emotional and contractual state. That means anyone out with an injury is NOT eligible to use. (We are ignoring COVID-19 diagnoses because this is supposed to be a fun diversion, not a reminder of the terrible things happening around us.)

Others are not eligible to use for a different reason. Some of them are locked in SPACE JAIL.

* “Cell numbers” correspond with the numbers on our prize wheel.

SPACE JAIL is not a life sentence. A lucky spin of our prize wheel can free one of them, and it happened again before Round 5. Randy Orton escaped SPACE JAIL. Remember, there is no “Double Jeopardy” so he can’t be sent back.

5 players were invited onto the Wrestling Mayhem Show for the latest round of Mayhem Mania 2021. Each can make ONE of the following changes to our card:

– SWAP one wrestler or team with one in another match on the card or replace them with a wrestler or team not currently on the card
– ADD a wrestler or team to an existing match
– DELETE a match in its entirety and replace it with a new match using entirely new wrestlers
– MATCH SWAP: This year, we have a designated “cinematic match” slot on our card. A player can choose to swap an existing match on the card for the match currently in that “cinematic match” slot.

With all that business out of the way, let’s take a look at the changes made during Round FIVE of Mayhem Mania 2021!

Move #1 (by Brandon)
DELETE Asuka vs. Meiko Satomura and CREATE Kushida vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Move #2 (by The Rizz)
DELETE Bad Bunny & Adam Pearce vs. Pat McAfee & Rob Gronkowski and CREATE Asuka vs. Meiko Satomura

Move #3 (by Alex Kahrs)
ADD Bad Bunny & Bayley to Bray Wyatt & Alexa Bliss vs. Johnny Mundo & Taya

Move #4 (by Bobbyfjtown)
SWAP Samoa Joe for “The Demon” Finn Balor

Move #5 (by HEEL Bradley)
DELETE Asuka vs. Meiko Satomura and CREATE Adam Cole vs. Daniel Bryan

Round 5 is in the books, and we have four newly created matches on our “undercard”

Bray Wyatt & Alexa Bliss vs. Johnny Mundo & Taya vs. Bad Bunny & Bayley
(Created by Alex Kahrs)
(*Designated as “cinematic match”)

Adam Cole vs. Daniel Bryan
(Created by HEEL Bradley)

“The Demon” Finn Balor vs. Karrion Kross vs. Aleister Black
(Created by Bobbyfjtown)

Kushida vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
(Created by Brandon)

We have three matches that survived the round without being altered in any way.

Tommaso Ciampa vs. Cesaro
(Created by Tina Keys)

Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Becky Lynch
(Created by Brandon)

Keith Lee vs. Pete Dunne vs. Roman Reigns
(Created by Alex Kahrs)

Finally, we have the FIRST match to graduate to this year’s SUPERCARD!

Raquel Gonzalez vs. Beth Phoenix
(Created by Tina Keys)

A match graduates if it survives THREE rounds without being altered in any way. Tina created our first graduated match and she will receive rewards! She will get to hand out a dose of PUNISHMENT to one of next week’s players. She will get a ticket to send one individual to SPACE JAIL. She’ll also get to name a participant in our first-ever Mayhem Mania WATCH PARTY! Tina will also create a new match to fill the open slot on our “undercard”. Our goal is to GRADUATE eight matches to our SUPERCARD by the time Mayhem Mania 2021 comes to an end.

The Rizz will be back next week under the “Alex Kahrs Rule”, which governs a match that does not survive the round in which it was created.

One more note: SPACE JAIL has a new resident. Mad Mike used the ticket he earned in our Elimination Chamber Challenge contest mid-round, and sent Pat McAfee to SPACE JAIL.

It’s been a wild ride so far, but we’re finally making some progress with the first match now on our SUPERCARD. Keep following along to find out what happens next. Thanks for supporting Mayhem Mania!

Mayhem Mania 2021: Round 4

Not every WWE wrestler is eligible to use. Under the rules of Mayhem Mania, everyone comes in their current physical, emotional and contractual state. That means anyone out with an injury is NOT eligible to use. (We are ignoring COVID-19 diagnoses because this is supposed to be a fun diversion, not a reminder of the terrible things happening around us.)

Others are not eligible to use for a different reason. Some of them are locked in SPACE JAIL.

* “Cell numbers” correspond with the numbers on our prize wheel

SPACE JAIL is not a life sentence. A lucky spin of our prize wheel can free one of them. Fortunately, that did not happen before Round 4 and SPACE JAIL remains secure…for now.

5 players were invited onto the Wrestling Mayhem Show for Round 4 of Mayhem Mania 2021.

With all that business out of the way, let’s take a look at the changes made during Round FOUR of Mayhem Mania 2021!

Move #1 (by Brandon)
DELETE Io Shirai vs. Rey Mysterio and CREATE Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Becky Lynch

Move #2 (by Mad Mike)
DELETE Elias & Drew McIntyre & Jinder Mahal vs. Damien Priest & Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch and CREATE Bray Wyatt & Alexa Bliss vs. Johnny Mundo & Taya

Move #3 (by Tina Keys)
DELETE The IIconics vs. Riott Squad and CREATE Tommaso Ciampa vs. Cesaro

Move #4 (by The Rizz)
DELETE Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly vs. Timothy Thatcher vs. Ilja Dragunov and CREATE Asuka vs. Meiko Satomura

Move #5 (by Chad The Shad)
DELETE Mercedes Martinez vs. Sasha Banks and CREATE Pat McAfee & Rob Gronkowski vs. Adam Pearce & Bad Bunny

With Round 4 in the books, we now have FIVE new matches on our card.

Bray Wyatt & Alexa Bliss vs. Johnny Mundo & Taya
(Created by Mad Mike)
(*Designated as “cinematic match”)

Tommaso Ciampa vs. Cesaro
(Created by Tina Keys)

Toni Storm vs. Rhea Ripley vs. Becky Lynch
(Created by Brandon)

Adam Pearce & Bad Bunny vs. Pat McAfee & Rob Gronkowski
(Created by Chad The Shad)

Asuka vs. Meiko Satomura
(Created by The Rizz)

Here are the three matches that survived Round 4 without being changed.

Raquel Gonzalez vs. Beth Phoenix
(Created by Tina Keys)

Samoa Joe vs. Karrion Kross vs. Aleister Black
(Created by “The Rev” Ron Hunt)

Keith Lee vs. Pete Dunne vs. Roman Reigns
(Created by Alex Kahrs)

If a match survives THREE rounds without being altered in any way, it will GRADUATE to our SUPERCARD. The creator of the match will receive rewards, including creating a new match to fill the open slot on our “undercard”. Our goal is to GRADUATE eight matches to our SUPERCARD by the time Mayhem Mania 2021 comes to an end.

One final note: Following Round 4, Chad The Shad used the two SPACE JAIL tickets he earned in our Royal Rumble contest to send BOTH IIconics – Peyton Royce and Billie Kay – to SPACE JAIL. In the process, the devious Chad exposed DEEP divides among the Mayhem Mania players in regards to how they desperate they are to see The IIconics in a Mayhem Mania.

Do The IIconics deserve to be in SPACE JAIL? What matches do you want to see us make? The only way to find out is to keep following Mayhem Mania 2021!

Mayhem Mania 2020: Patreon In The Bank!

This. Is. Mayhem Mania!

This is the ultimate fantasy booking game/competitive thought experiment. The goal is to create the best WrestleMania card possible – not necessarily to predict what WWE will do. That means we must play by the rules of our current reality. Everyone comes in their current (physical, emotional, psychological, etc.) state. Bottom line, if Vince McMahon can do it, we can do it. Mayhem Mania 2020: It Begins

Welcome back to year six of Mayhem Mania!

This is the ultimate fantasy booking game. The goal is to create the best WrestleMania card possible – not necessarily to predict what WWE will do. That means we must play by the rules of our current reality. Everyone comes in their current (physical, emotional, psychological, etc.) state. Bottom line, if Vince McMahon can do it, we can do it.

The WWE’s talent pool has never been deeper. Combine that with the other talents on the fringes that they theoretically may have access to and there’s no excuse for them not putting together the greatest WrestleMania card of all time. We’re going to show what’s possible.

Our game began during the Wrestling Mayhem Show on Tuesday, January 21. Eight players were invited to each create a single match. As an added layer to this year’s game, we’re asking more people to eliminate names from being eligible to use in Mayhem Mania – sending them through the Forbidden Portal into Space Jail. But there’s a catch, unlike in previous years, this may not be a permanent. Each week a random spin of our newly acquired prize wheel will determine if one of them can escape from Space Jail and re-enter the game. No “double jeopardy”. Once someone escapes from Space Jail, they can’t be sent back.

So, let’s check out the 8 matches our crew created.

Match #1
(Created by BobbyFJtown)
Finn Balor vs. Bray Wyatt
week1-1

Match #2
(Created by Ronnie Starks)
#DIY vs. Time Splitters
week1-8
Match #3
(Created by Sorgatron)
Elias vs. Tony Nese
week1-2

Match #4
(Created by Honey Badger)
Rhea Ripley vs. Mercedes Martinez

week1-5

Match #5
(Created by Dave Podnar)
Velveteen Dream vs. R-Truth
week1-4

Match #6
(Created by Tina Keys)
Mia Yim & Kay Lee Ray & Tegan Nox vs. Asuka & Kairi Sane & Io Shirai
week1-7

Match #7
(Created by Mad Mike)
WALTER vs. Keith Lee
week1-3

Match #8
(Created by Mainstream Mat)
Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong vs. Shayna Baszler & Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shafir
week1-6

And here’s who got sent to Space Jail…

SPACE JAIL!
BobbyFJtown: Randy Orton
Ronnie Starks: Enzo
Sorgatron: Lacey Evans
Honey Badger: Bayley
Dave Podnar: Triple H
Tina Keys: Ronda Rousey
Mad Mike: WeeLC
Mainstream Mat: Bobby Fish

So, Mayhem Mania 2020 is underway. We have an eight-match card and we have eight people/things now serving time in Space Jail. Next Tuesday, we’ll invite five players to each make a single change to the existing card. Remember, any match that survives three consecutive rounds without being altered in any way will graduate to the Mayhem Mania SUPERCARD. The creator of that match will get some rewards and we’ll create a new match to take its place on our “undercard”.

By the time this whole thing is over, we’ll have eight graduated matches on our SUPERCARD. Trust me, it’ll work. We’ve already done this five time, and we haven’t failed yet.

Which of our eight matches do you like the best? Which ones do you think need some work? Which ones need to be dumped entirely. Post a comment or hit up the Wrestling Mayhem Show on social media to share your thoughts.

Before we go, we want to mention our Royal Rumble Challenge. Email your picks for the winners of both Rumble matches to [email protected]. Each correct pick will earn you a ticket to send someone through the Forbidden Portal to Space Jail. So, if you get both picks right, you’ll get to send two people to Space Jail! What a deal!

Enjoy Mayhem Mania and we’ll see you next week!

Mayhem Mania 2019: Round 5

This. is. Mayhem Mania!

Not quite a game. Not really a contest. More like a competitive thought experiment. The object is to create the best WrestleMania card possible – NOT necessarily to predict what WWE will do.

This is not fantasy booking. It’s more like reality booking. Any match created must have at least a chance of happening in this year’s WrestleMania. That means all wrestlers come in their current physical, emotional and contractual state. Anyone selected for a match must have a reasonable chance of being hired by WWE to appear on the real-life WrestleMania card.

Simply put, you’re Vince McMahon with infinite cash and no self-control.

For those of you who are just joining us, here’s where you can catch up on Mayhem Mania 2019: Opening Round – Round 1 – Round 2 – Round 3 – Round 4

Round 5 of Mayhem Mania 2019 was held during the Wrestling Mayhem Show on Tuesday, February 26. 5 people were invited to each make a single change to our existing 8 matches on our “undercard”. Any match that survives 3 rounds without being altered in any way GRADUATES to our SUPERCARD. So far, one match has earned this distinction. (more…)

Wrestling Mayhem Show 614: Mayhem Up All Night

We’re LIVE for this week’s Podcast with Billy and women’s wrestler Honey Badger in studio!

  • Shout out to Michael Watson and his TheWrestlers PhotoBook project.  We got our copy!
  • So. Much. Wrestling.  This weekend was RIDICULOUS – in a good way.
  • So…Karaoke at WWE Hall of Fame?
  • We think one of the best parts of the Hall of Fame is the old stories.  But, with all the backstage stuff the WWE Network is doing these days, we get those stories elsewhere.
  • We were super happy to see the return of the Salmon Jacket during Mark Henry’s induction to the Hall of Fame.
  • NXT Takeover set the bar for WrestleMania weekend  and what a bar it was!
  • Sorry ladies for having to follow up that Ladder Match.
  • Gargano v Ciampa was everything we wanted it to be.
  • The IndyIntegration over WrestleMania weekend was good to see!
  • A few people we know took the opportunity to get in front of as many eyes as possible at all the Indy Wrestling shows for WrestleMania weekend – like Dakota Kai who wrestled 6x!
  • Since we talked about Hall of Fame and NXT Takeover, we’re ready for some WrestleMania chat!
  • Thanks to @ReginaHBadger for stating the obvious – the Diva Cup shaped like an actual “Diva Cup.”
  • The Womens Battle Royal trophy was probably the brain child of the same person who thought Great Balls Of Fire would be a good PPV.
  • Charlotte vs Asuka was as amazing as we expected it.
  • Leave it to the Nia Jax win to make our guest @ReginaHBadger cry tears of joy!
  • So….Ronda Rousy…we have mixed thoughts – including some Tilted Kilt references, but kudos to a legit match on the biggest stage at WrestleMania.
  • Spoiler: There are no good guys in UFC.
  • WTH WWE? Nicholas wasn’t even a Make A Wish kid?!?!?
  • Not cool JohnCena.  That spot had to happen at that particular moment?  You couldn’t let the women have their moment?
  • OH: Undertaker looked beautiful – and I’m not talking about the extensions.
  • Elias killed it.
  • RELATED: May have been the only time we were legit pissed at Elias.  HE’S NO UNDERTAKER!
  • MayhemMania is put away until next year.  But, it’s the return of the Big Question!  This week’s question: What makes WrestleMania different from any other wrestling show that WWE does?
  • Why ISN’T WrestleMania considered for an Emmy?
  • Our guest @ReginaHBadger is sharing some thoughts on Intergender matches in WWE.
  • What did YOU learn in wrestling this week?
