Wrestling Mayhem Show 1020: WWE Mexico ity Takeover

TripleMania brought two nights of championship matches, lucha libre spectacle, unexpected appearances, wild interference, and one unforgettable image of Omos sending Rey Mysterio through a table.

That made TruePrinceOfPro the perfect special guest co-host for Wrestling Mayhem Show 1020. He joined Sorg and Mad Mike to examine what worked, what felt different under WWE’s influence, and where Triple A could go next.

Did TripleMania Still Feel Like Triple A?

The Las Vegas portion of TripleMania looked and felt more like a WWE production than past Triple A events. That polish created a larger presentation, but it also raised a fair question: Has some of the promotion’s distinct personality been lost?

The opening night did not carry the same importance as the Mexico City card, and portions of the Las Vegas audience were unfamiliar with the Triple A roster. However, the wrestlers still delivered the unpredictable action that defines lucha libre.

The Copa Bardahl offered a showcase for Triple A personalities including Los Vipers and Niño Hamburguesa. Omos immediately stood out as an obvious favorite, but his presence also demonstrated how naturally he has fit into the promotion.

The weekend’s other highlights included Rey Fenix defending the Cruiserweight Championship in a fast-paced four-way match and Nathan Frazer and Axiom proving that their style belongs in Triple A. Rather than becoming lost on WWE’s crowded main roster, performers like Frazer and Axiom could benefit from having a regular place to deliver the kind of matches that best showcase their abilities.

New Champions and New Possibilities

La Catalina’s championship victory carried particular emotional weight. After leaving WWE and rebuilding her career through CMLL, she returned with the goal of capturing championship gold. Her victory completed a compelling journey and created several fresh possibilities, including a future match with Roxanne Perez.

The Wagner Brothers also defeated the War Raiders to capture tag team gold, adding another notable championship change to the weekend.

Corey Graves earned praise for bringing energy and valuable context to the English commentary despite clearly struggling with his voice. JBL also continued to be an entertaining presence, especially when playing off the performers and the Spanish-language commentary team.

El Grande Americano’s Championship Celebration

The TripleMania main event embraced every bit of lucha libre chaos available. Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano were surrounded by interference, callbacks, and the kind of crowded finish that would feel excessive almost anywhere else.

Here, it felt appropriate.

El Grande Americano captured the championship before a live band played as the crowd sang along. The celebration showed how completely Mexican audiences have embraced a character who was never originally designed to become this kind of hero.

The match also continued speculation about a future showdown between Rey Mysterio and Dominik. A mask-versus-hair match in Mexico would carry cultural weight that would be difficult to reproduce anywhere else.

The larger question is whether Triple A can use WWE’s resources to become a truly international touring brand. Successful events in the United States could eventually open opportunities in Spain and other markets without abandoning the promotion’s Mexican identity.

Penta Wins the Night Without Winning the Match

WWE’s visit to Mexico also produced major developments outside TripleMania. Sami Zayn became WWE Champion, Damian Priest turned against R-Truth, and Chad Gable delivered another outstanding performance against Dragon Lee.

The biggest debate came from Penta’s title match with Roman Reigns. WWE presented the match like a WrestleMania main event, and the audience responded accordingly. Penta looked completely at home opposite one of WWE’s biggest stars.

Some of the crew believed WWE should have completed the moment with a championship change. Others argued that Penta’s performance established him as a main-event wrestler even in defeat.

The familiar claim that a popular wrestler “does not need a championship” was not accepted without a fight. If Roman Reigns is already established without a title, why could that championship not be used to elevate Penta or LA Knight?

Whatever happens next, Penta proved that he belongs in WWE’s biggest matches.

Wrestling Inside an Aircraft Hangar

The episode also spotlighted Prospect Pro Wrestling’s Banger at the Hangar, held for families connected to the 911th Airlift Wing near Pittsburgh International Airport.

The wrestling ring was positioned inside a massive aircraft hangar, with performers making their entrances through a military aircraft. Approximately a thousand people watched throughout the event, and the Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot even became involved in a confrontation with Paul Atlas.

The show also served as a sendoff for Dennis Gregory, a fixture of Pittsburgh professional wrestling for more than two decades. For Sorg, filming Gregory in 2026 echoed his earliest years recording Pittsburgh wrestling in 2008.

It was a reminder that independent wrestling can still create settings and experiences that audiences will never find on weekly television.

What We Learned

Mad Mike noticed that Joe Hendry’s album announcement and guitar-based appearances are beginning to resemble the old Elias playbook. He also made an exception to his usual opposition to gimmick infringement after Rebel adopted the “Role Model” title during an emotional AEW tribute.

TruePrinceOfPro brought several lessons from Mystery Wrestling. Von Vertigo lost a match in which the loser would be erased from history, leading to a video package that removed him from old photographs while the audience pretended not to recognize him.

A Fans Are the Weapons match took its stipulation literally by pulling spectators into the action. Mystery Wrestling also presented an IMAX Camera Match involving Johnny TV and an enormous functioning camera that became increasingly difficult for its operator to carry.

The discussion inspired another possible stipulation: a Fans Bring the Cameras match assembled from audience phone footage, VHS tapes, Polaroids, and outdated digital cameras.

The most meaningful lesson came from Sorg. Wrestling can hurt people, and wrestling can help people heal. Sometimes it can do both during the same show. After an emotional period for the Pittsburgh wrestling community, he thanked everyone who offered support and expressed hope that the people involved could recover and move forward together.
