What We Just Discovered About Lucha Underground Will Blow Your Mind

Last week, Lucha Underground co-executive producer Chris DeJoseph joined the Wrestling Mayhem Show crew for a special edition of the Mid-Week War.

During our talk, Chris gave us a big clue into one of Lucha Underground’s biggest mysteries – the seven Aztec tribes.

“You can tell what they are if you look at the seven ancient Aztec medallions.”

This is the Gift of the Gods championship, and you can quickly begin to make some assumptions based on the seven medallions.

We poured over hours of Lucha Underground episodes over the past few days, searching for these symbols (no doubt overlooking many other clues hidden in plain sight). What we discovered in that short amount of time stunnedus.

If you’re not up to speed on your Lucha Underground Season 3 viewing, consider this a SPOILER ALERT. Otherwise, what follows is nothing more than some highly informed speculation. We have no knowledge of the actual events and episodes that have yet to air.

Remember back in Season 2 when Rey Mysterio and El Dragon Azteca Jr. revealed that they’d been invited to compete in Aztec Warfare 2? Rey held up his personal invitation. See the seal?

Yes, it matches one of the seven Aztec medallions.

Rey received his invitation while Catrina was still in charge of The Temple. So, it appears this is her tribe – the “Death Tribe”, for lack of a better term.

We’ve got more. Remember Nightclaw?

Yes, the seemingly random surprise entrant into the Gift of the Gods championship match at Ultima Lucha Dos, who got in by being gifted an ancient Aztec medallion by Dario Cueto himself. Perhaps Dario noticed something about Nightclaw that most of us overlooked.

Look familiar?

Hello! Another Aztec seal, right in front of our eyes. I think we’ll call it the “Cat Tribe”. I’ll apologize to anyone who noticed this at the time, but no one I’ve spoke with saw it at the time and, honestly, who’s spent more than a split second thinking about Nightclaw since?

So, let’s take another look at those seven ancient Aztec medallions.

Medallion #1 – Despite all our efforts to this point, we still don’t know what or who this represents. There’s a working theory that it could involve King Cuerno, who was known to wear a deer headdress.

Medallion #2 – This one is easy. It’s the Rabbit Tribe led by Paul London, along with Mala Suerte and Saltador.

Medallion #3 – We’re running on the assumption that this is the Moth Tribe of Marty “The Moth” Martinez and Mariposa.

Medallion #4 – This is the Reptile Tribe, and we’ve seen this seal in the “throne room” of Kobra Moon. Of course, the other tribe members we know of are Pindar, Vibora and (probably against his will) Drago.

Medallion #5 – We don’t know for sure, but we think this one is tied into the late El Dragon Azteca, Rey Mysterio and their protege El Dragon Azteca Jr.

Medallion #6 – This is our newly discovered Cat Tribe. We know Nightclaw is in, and he’s probably not alone. In fact, it stands to reason that Prince Puma is part of this tribe too, whether he knows it or not. Very early on in Lucha Underground, Konnan stated that Puma was a direct descendent of one of the seven ancient Aztec tribes.

Medallion #7 – This our other new discovery, the Death Tribe of Catrina and Mil Muertes.

So, we have a few more answers than we had before. Now, what do we do with this information? What does it all mean? Rey Mysterio has stated that his goal is bring together the seven Aztec tribes so they can do battle once again. Chances are, once all of them fully emerge, something big is going to happen.

Perhaps you have some insights or theories of your own. Feel free to share them in the comments below.
